Are Nassau Excursions Good With Kids?

Most of what parents need to decide a Nassau excursion is not in the marketing copy. It is in the eligibility rules: who is old enough to drive, who is heavy enough to ride, who needs a passport at the counter. Those rules are published, they are firm, and they rule several tours in or out before price or preference gets a say. Here they all are in one place.
Are Nassau excursions good with kids?
Several are, but not the ones people usually assume. The ATV tour needs a driver aged 21 with a valid licence, the rum and food walking tour is 18 and over, and horseback riding starts at age 9. The boat trips and the trolley tour carry no published minimum age and are where most families land. Check the rule before the price, because the rule is not negotiable at the dock.
Beyond the published rules there is a practical question that matters just as much: how long the day is. Four hours on a boat is a long stretch for a small child, and it is the single most common reason a family day in Nassau goes flat.
Which Nassau tours have a published minimum age?
Three of the nine. The ATV tour requires a minimum age of 21 to drive plus a valid driver's licence. Beach horseback riding publishes a minimum age of 9 and a maximum rider weight of 235 lb (107 kg). The rum and food walking tour is 18 and over, and the Jetcar rental strictly requires photo ID. The 18 limit is there because the Bahamian legal drinking age is 18, and the Jetcar counter wants a passport or an equivalent document in hand. The other six publish no age minimum at all.

Where a listing publishes no minimum age, that is not the same as a recommendation. It means the operator has left it to your judgement, and the day length and the sun exposure are then yours to weigh.
Why the ATV and Jetcar tours rule out most families
The ATV tour is a drive-your-own experience: minimum age 21, valid driver's licence, no exceptions at the shop. The Jetcar rental strictly requires a passport or valid photo ID, which teenagers travelling on a parent's documentation often do not have on them. Both are good tours. Neither is a family tour in the ordinary sense.
The ATV route is worth knowing about anyway, because it takes in Fort Montagu, the Queen's Staircase, Government House and Fort Charlotte before a 40-minute stop at Junkanoo Beach. Older teenagers who can drive get a lot out of it. There is also a real cost point here: liability insurance of $69.95 per person and a $22.00 fuel surcharge are mandatory and charged at the shop, on top of the $99 booking price. Horses are matched to rider level, helmets and gear are provided, and there is a safety briefing before anyone mounts. It is two hours, which suits a shorter attention span better than a boat day.
The ride runs from a ranch on Norman Road through woodland trails to two private beaches, then into the shallow sea. Are the four-hour boat trips too long for small children?
Sometimes. Life vests are provided for all ages on the pig boats and flotation is available for weak swimmers on the snorkel stops, so the water itself is well handled. The issue is duration: four hours with a boat transfer at each end asks a lot of a five-year-old. Older children generally love it.
If you are going to do a boat day with young kids, the swimming pigs and private beach club trip has the useful advantage of a beach club at the far end, with chairs, restrooms and Wi-Fi, so there is somewhere to retreat to when the novelty runs out. What is the easiest family option on a short port day?

It is the shortest, cheapest and least demanding thing we list: an open-air electric trolley, a rum cake factory tasting, half an hour at the Atlantis grounds, fifteen minutes at the Queen's Staircase and a beach stop, with treats and water included.
